  12/14/07: I Am Legend (2007)

“The Last Man On Earth Is Not Alone,” proclaims the movie poster for I Am Legend. That’s actually kind of obvious. Will Smith has a dog. You can see it right there in the publicity still. More importantly, Will Smith is accompanied by the spirit of Charlton Heston in our beloved The Omega Man.

We’re very happy to announce that I Am Legend is more a remake of that 1971 classic than a reinvention of Richard Matheson’s classic novel. The screenwriters for The Omega Man get a credit, too. The opening even improves on the original with some drag-racing deer hunting. That might actually beat Charlton Heston’s elevator music.

[UPDATE: Watch that drag-racing deer hunting here.]

The title of I Am Legend still comes from the source novel, but The Omega Man’s message of Western Civilization Pride remains intact. The only real disappointment is that Will Smith doesn’t get to strike a Jesus Christ pose at the end. That’s a line you won’t read in many film reviews. There’s some Godly content, though, and that’s always a big twist.

Make it your own: In theaters now, and likely playing until the theaters are all emptied by that horrific airborne virus in 2011.

And for more The Omega Man action, here’s an article about how we used to think Anthony Zerbe was dead.
