When we lived in Birmingham, AL, some bluebloods passed legislation to legalize horse racing in the city. They built a very nice racetrack, and invited Jimmy Breslin to attend Opening Day. In what may have been one of his last lucid moments, Breslin looked at the upscale restaurants that were at the track for all the Birmingham socialites, and then asked a simple question: “Where are the hot dog stands?”

There were none. Horse racing didn’t last for very long in Birmingham. In what must be totally unrelated news, we’ll join other sites in noting that the New York Sun has ceased publishing.
